Summary

Operation Commander was the title given to the individual in charge of an entire military operation. Typically, an operation commander was appointed to conduct important major operations when the combined efforts of several branches of the military were required. As the sole decision-maker for the operation, the commander was either part of one of the military groups participating in the operation or was a member of a superior organization. During operations, all commanders of military groups taking part in the operation retained command of their groups, but reported directly to the commander of the operation, and not to their hierarchical leadership.
